Fancy Guppy’s Overview

The fancy guppy is the most popular freshwater tropical aquarium fish. It has an elongated body with pointed snout and upturned mouth. Body is typically grayish-silver in color with triangular caudal fin. The male guppy is smaller than female with ornamental caudal and dorsal fins while female is duller in color. Dorsal fin bears 7-8 soft rays while anal fin contains 8 – 10 soft rays. It prefers water with pH of 7.0 – 8.0, hardness of 10 – 28 dGH and temperature of 66°F – 84°F. In nature the guppy is preyed upon by birds such as kingfishers and larger fish. It is omnivore and in wild, it generally feeds on a variety of food including benthic algae and aquatic insect larvae.  In captive condition they eat algae-based flake food, freeze-dried bloodworms, Tubifex, brine shrimp and flakes. It also eats small parts of fresh earthworms and whole parts of bloodworms. They also like to eat some blanched vegetables like courgette, cucumber or lettuce and algae wafers. For optimum health and coloration give them a variety of foods and feed should be offered 3-4 times a day. Males mature at two months and females at three months of age. The female can grow up to 6 cm while the male generally grows up to 3.5 cm in length.  It can live up to 5 years or more with proper care.

The fancy guppy (Poecilia reticulata) was first described in Venezuela by Wilhelm Peters in 1859. It was reclassified as Lebistes reticulatus by Regan in 1913. Then in 1963, Rosen and Bailey brought it back to its original name, Poecilia reticulata. Now it belongs to the family Poeciliidae under order Cyprinodontiformes of calss Actinopterygii. The genus ‘Poecilia’ is derived from the Greek poikilo meaning variable while the species ‘reticulata’ is derived from the Latin ‘reticulatus’ meaning a network-like pattern.  It is not listed on the IUCN Red List as Threatened Species.

It also eats small parts of fresh earthworms and whole parts of bloodworms. They also like to eat some blanched vegetables like courgette, cucumber or lettuce and algae wafers. Housing Fancy Guppy

The fancy guppy is a popular aquarium fish due to its brilliant color and triangular caudal fin. It is peaceful and hardy fish that is good for beginners and experienced fish keepers. It requires 10 gallons tank or larger is recommended. The tank should have hard water with a temperature between 78 and 82 °F. It is a very peaceful fish and it should not be kept with fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs, serpae tetras, larger Cichlids including Angelfish and Betta splendens. It does well in a quiet community tank with other livebearers, rasboras, corydoras, small loricariids and tetras. It also does well with Otocinclus catfish, Dwarf Gourami and snail. The tank should have regular water changes of 25%-50% two to three times a month.

Breeding Fancy Guppy

The fancy guppy is livebearer and it breeds readily in the home aquarium without special attention if it is well fed and cared for. The breeding tank should be 10-20 gallons with gentle filtration. It prefers water temperatures that should be ranged from 72–79 °F for reproduction. Female guppy first produces offspring at 10–20 weeks of age, and they continue to reproduce until 20–34 months of age while male guppy matures in 7 weeks or less. Pregnant female guppy has enlarged and darkened gravid spots near anal fin just behind the belly. Male is about half the size of female with colorful and extremely large caudal fin and the anal fin is transformed into a gonopodium for internal fertilization. After a gestation period of four to six weeks female gives birth to 20-40 or more live babies. Baby fry should be fed with live foods, such as baby brine shrimp, microworms, infusoria and vinegar eels. It also takes finely ground flake food, egg yolk and liquid fish food etc.

Sexing Fancy Guppy

The male is easy to distinguish from the female. Male is about half the size of female with colorful and extremely large caudal fin while the female is usually larger, thicker bodied, with less color and a smaller caudal fin. The male also bears a stick like gonpodium, which is a modification of the anal fin used in reproduction. Mature female also has enlarged and darkened gravid spots near anal fin just behind the belly.
