Introduction to Rili Shrimp

Rili shrimp were originally bred by breeders in Taiwan sometime in 2010 and since then they have been universally adopted by aquarium keepers. They are a beautiful newer addition to the freshwater Shrimp hobby. This prevalent shrimp makes it possible for the Neocaridina Davidi shrimp to be established into a number of different varieties and patterns other than just color strains. Rili shrimp can be found in a number of color variations including red, blue, yellow and green. They measure about 0.8”-0.9” in size

Rili Shrimp Origin and Background

The Rili Shrimp originated from the Taiwanese keepers around 2010 and since then it has been a highly sought shrimp owing to its new coloration and impeccable blend of vivacious colors and clear parts. Rilis are mutants of the red Neocaridinas with white patches, bands, splotches and stripes. It was after selectively breeding them when the line was alleviated and availed to the general public. Rili shrimp fetched an excess price once it arrived in the North American market but since then their prices have dropped drastically. After stabilizing the Rili line, color transmutes of blue, green and orange/yellow have been attained.

Water Parameters for Rili Shrimp

Since Rili shrimp is a Neocaridina species, they require similar conditions vital for the survival of similar shrimp like Red Cherry Shrimp, Snowball shrimp, Blue Pearl shrimp, Chocolate shrimp and Pumpkin Shrimp. The best temperatures for Rili Shrimp are those ranging from 68F-78F although a range from 64F-80F is also possible, however no breeding will occur at these extremes. Sanitary and clean water as usual is very essential for the survival of these shrimp and any other in the hobby.

Rili Shrimp’s feeding

Rili shrimp feeding is no different from the feeding of any other shrimp. One thing you should remember is that feeding should be done according to the population size. As your shrimp breeds into a colony you will be required to increase the feeding proportionally to support the growing population size. It is also advisable to feed the young shrimp with powdered baby food since the first few days of the shrimp’s life are usually the most important. (Xanax) You should feed the shrimp once a day with an amount that they will be in a position to consume in 1-2 hours.

Breeding Rili Shrimp

As with many Neocaridina Davidi (Heteropoda) variants, breeding and keeping Rili shrimp is quite easy. Since they are almost the same as Red Cherry Shrimp, Blue Pearl shrimp or any other Neocaridina variant, their breeding requirements are also similar and can easily be bred in a basic shrimp tank. Essentially, with clean water, suitable temperature and both sexes in the tank, the shrimp will readily reproduce.

The Sexing of Rili Shrimp

Sexing of Rili Shrimp is easy just like any other Neocaridina strain. The curved berry and the saddle on the females are clear indications.  The males on the other hand have a concave underbelly with longer antennae and incline to be a bit cleaner. The Rili Shrimp saddle appears to be blue-ish in color.

Rili Shrimp Grading and Variations

The grading of the Rili shrimp, either Black Rili or Blue Rili has not yet been established. This is because no two Rilis look alike; their colors can vary from an inclusive “helmet head” and tail section to spotted patterns on the tail and head. One attribute that is common in all the Rilis is the blue-tinted or clear midsection. You can find more Rili Shrimp Grading and Variations over at Shrimpery.
